A Teacher's Day Experience

In the past week, I was really tense about our upcoming exams. I always thought I needed a break. My class teacher called me on the afternoon of 3rd September 2021. She informed me that I was selected to be a student-teacher. At first, I didn’t actually know what she was talking about, but then I recalled the time when my sister had also become a teacher for teachers' day. She even gave me a choice between the subjects I would prefer to teach. It was either English or Maths. I chose English right away. Then she told me that I would be teaching Adjectives to the class of 7-C.

The next day I was given the textbook pages and the concerned teachers co-operated with me, explaining to me what exactly I had to do and helped me with any doubts I had. I started working on my presentation right away. I made sure to choose eye-catching colors to make it more interesting. I added my own fun, artistic element to it. All students of ninth were in a pair, one student had to teach English while the other had to teach maths. My partner in this was Meera (Name changed). I had arranged a short google meet with her to make sure we had our teaching material in place. We also had to arrange a short game to play with the students. We wanted ours to be interesting, so we chose scavenger hunt. We would give them a name of a household object and they would bring it as fast as they could. By almost 11 p.m. we had everything in place and we were good to go for the next day.

I planned to wake up at 8, but it was a cozy morning so I wanted to sleep more, so I woke up at 9. I had a quick bath, got ready in my favorite grey Kurti by 9:30. I could feel the nervousness inside me. I sat in front of the computer and thought, what if they don’t understand what I teach or my network connection doesn’t cooperate with me. All of these doubts rushed out as I joined the google meet code of the class I had to teach.

The class teacher of 7-C explained to her class what the teacher's day activity was all about and she also introduced us very sweetly. As it was the English lecture first, I started teaching. I made sure to interact with the class, just to make it more interesting. I was not expecting the students to be so enthusiastic and eagerly waiting for me to pick them to answer. After half an hour, it was Meera's turn to teach Maths. Her presentation was the cutest. After she was done, we also introduced the game to the class. They were really excited, but before that students, if our school had prepared a few videos to thank the teacher. We saw them and then the fun began. I presented the list of items to bring while Meera was hosting the game. Since there were almost 30 students in the class it was hard to see who brought what first. Then the class teacher gave us a very clever idea. She told us to tell them to raise their hands using the google meet feature, and it would show us the person who got it first. This went on enthusiastically.

By the end, the class teacher told us that she really enjoyed our teaching as well as the game. She also asked the students to give us feedback. Oh my! Those kind and supportive words of the students and teacher are something I will never forget. This was a really great experience and we also got to know the teacher’s perspective in a class. This overall was a very different experience, as I got a break from being a student.
