Sexism - A Need To Stop It

Sexism- many times we avoid this word on daily life just because we think it makes us look like an extremist. It is clearly blind stereotyping. Many times the people do not even care to know the meaning of the word before concluding it is unrequired, useless and something that they need to stay away from. Many times, I personally have judged this word, before I knew its meaning, and without knowing it stood for a greater good.

Sexism, defined by Wikipedia means ‘Sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on one's sex or gender. Sexism can affect anyone, but it primarily affects women and girls. It has been linked to stereotypes and gender roles and may include the belief that one sex or gender is intrinsically superior to another. Extreme sexism may foster sexual harassment, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.’ This enough is required to make a person understand that is a part of the greater good.

We go through sexism daily. at work, at school at any other public place. It is experienced by both girls and boys. When a boy cries, he is often told ‘ don’t cry, only girls cry’ . when girls drive, they are looked down and are told ‘ we have to reach to the destination and not to heaven’. For many, it is just fine, they are used to it. But should they accept it, NO.

I am a girl. I have many times observed sexism in my neighborhood. I was looked down when I had a taste for action movies, I was made fun for knowing how to whistle, called off for being ‘bossy’ ( which I clearly wasn’t) and judged for playing arm wrestling and winning it. I was many times avoided by the girls because I took pride in calling myself Feminist. The word Feminist is many times kept parallel to ‘ man hating, which clearly was opposite to it’s true cause.

Another way we go through sexism daily is through body shaming. Many times people judge people on the types of body they have. It is still prevalent in these times that a lady, without perfect breasts or slim waist isn’t of any use and gents without 6 packs are just ugly. The only things women should look up to is getting married and men should not hesitate to rape because girls should be dressing properly. Nonsense! This is nothing to be accepted.

Why aren’t people hesitating to stand up to it? Why aren’t we yet at an non- sexist society? Why haven’t we even reached our target? and finally’ will a day come when girls do not need to be sacred to see what they wear and men being not forced to hide their feelings?

I don’t think this needs a conclusion. This just need a stop.

If you are against something make sure it is for a proper cause
